Sharing Kotlin across Forbes Android and iOS
Since August 2023 I have been a Lead Mobile Developer at Forbes, working on Kotlin Multiplatform.
The Android app is built with KMP. On iOS, the migration was to use that same shared Kotlin for all functionality except UI — SwiftUI stays native. The point of the shared layer is not a lowest-common-denominator UI. It is one place for behavior, with each platform keeping the interface that belongs there.
The same engagement includes the Forbes Vetted API. That work sits in Kotlin, Ktor, Go, and Node.js alongside the mobile clients.
This is the same KMP pattern I have used on other products — Eneco’s iOS rewrite, MiRus healthcare apps, Fifty Fifty Card — and it is the architecture I reach for when iOS and Android have to stay honest with each other without pretending they are one UI toolkit.
